Our second grade students are building strong mathematical foundations as they learn to add three-digit numbers using a variety of strategies. Rather than relying on just one method, students are exploring multiple approaches to deepen their understanding and flexibility with numbers.
Ms. Marton's students are using strategies such as place value decomposition, breaking numbers apart into hundreds, tens and ones to make addition more manageable. Others are using expanded form to clearly see how numbers combine, while some students are applying the standard algorithm as they grow more confident. Open number lines and base ten models are also helping students visualize their thinking and make sense of the math in a concrete way.
By engaging in these different strategies, students are not only solving problems but also developing a deeper understanding of how numbers work. This approach encourages critical thinking, builds confidence and supports students in becoming strong, flexible mathematicians.
