LCSD is thrilled to announce that Martin Road Elementary has been selected as a recipient of the prestigious New York State MLK Leaders are Readers Award! This honor, created 21 years ago by the New York State Governor and Project FLIGHT, celebrates schools that embody the values of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The award recognizes institutions that promote literacy, serve diverse communities and inspire young readers to embrace the joy of learning.
The selection criteria are based on need, the population served, Title One status and recommendations from teachers. Martin Road was nominated by our very own, Lila Verstreate, whose heartfelt recommendation highlighted the school’s commitment to uplifting its students and fostering a love of reading.
"It is such an honor to be chosen for this award, and I am so proud to be a part of it. My mission is to show the students in this district that they deserve to not only be seen, but to be celebrated," Verstreate commented. "Receiving this recognition can inspire our students to aim higher and develop a love for literature with access to so many different books."
Verstreate also reflected on the impact of Project FLIGHT’s work saying,
"The women behind Project FLIGHT have inspired me in so many ways. Their philanthropic spirit continues to light the path for educators and students alike. I hope our students find the same inspiration from this experience, and that it sparks a lifelong love of reading."
As part of this award, Martin Road School will receive a donation of books and learning materials from Project FLIGHT, to be presented during a special assembly in February (Official Date TBD). The school plans to showcase students’ talents and emphasize the importance of literacy, particularly in the lower grades, during this momentous celebration.
This award marks a significant milestone for Martin Road and the Lackawanna community. As we look forward to the assembly in February, we are excited to continue promoting literacy and creating lasting change in the lives of our students.
